Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary, which will be closed to
seabed mining and oil and gas exploration, encompasses about 135 miles of pristine
coastline and 2,500 square nautical miles. It extends north of Ocean City to just
northwest of Neah Bay.
The sanctuary protects one of the largest concentrations of seabirds in the
continental U.S., more varieties of kelp than anywhere else and the world's largest
octopus species. It is the home of transplanted sea otters and harbors gray whales
migrating south and north in fall and spring. Seals, sea lions, deer and eagles are common
sights among the sea stacks and tiny islands that surging surf has pounded out of the
coastline over the ages.
